Randy Wiley is ìone of Americaís top freehand pipe carversî quoted directly from the Ultimate Pipe Book second edition page 63 written by Richard Carleton Hacker. Randy Wiley also has been featured in Pipes and Tobacco Magazine and in many news paper articles. Wiley has been successfully making moderate to high price pipes for over 23 years. Randy Wiley worked as a carpenter long before he made his first pipe. One day during a renovating project at the Tampa museum he met a wood sculptor. Randy befriended the wood sculptor that later invited Wiley to be his apprentice. During Randy Wileyís apprenticeship he became very skilled with specialized wood carving tools. After serving the apprenticeship Randy refined his talents for a few more years at a Tampa pipe making company. Finally he branched out on his own to form Wiley pipes.

Randy creates all his pipes from Plateau or Ebascean Grecian briar. His pipe shapes are inspired by the briarís wood grain. He cautiously and carefully strives to get the best presentation from every briar block. He treats the Briar with hot oil to enhance its beauty and smoking qualities. After that Randy uses a special sanding technique he called a trade secret. What ever the secret is, it makes for a finish that is smooth as glass. Randy achieves a very rich color stain for his pipes by custom mixing his stains till he gets exactly the effect he wants. Finally all his pipes are finished with a buffed coat of canuba wax.
