In 1890, Charles Peterson developed what is now known as the Peterson Patent System. The heart of the Peterson System is the unique graduated bore in the mouthpiece. This makes the suction applied by the smoker 15 times weaker by the time it reaches the tobacco chamber. Result: the moisture and bitter tars flow into the reservoir without reaching the smoker's mouth.
You either love it, or hate it.The Peterson Lip further enhances the effectiveness of the graduated bore by directing the smoke up and away from direct contact with the tongue. The smoke is then distributed evenly, drastically decreasing the chance of tongue bite. The shape of the "P-lip" vulcanite mouthpiece is shaped so the tongue rests in the depression under the mouthpiece opening. For those who hate it, most Peterson pipes are available with standard mouthpieces.

Briars are carefully examined for imperfections and selected briars of exceptional grain, known as "straight grains" are carefully stored, waiting to be specially carved by hand by our most skilled craftsmen, the hand crafted straight grain pipe and the increasingly rare skill required to make it, is something unique. To watch a craftsman shape, turn, sand and polish the 150 year old root of the erica arboria is to witness something quite special.
Only a very limited quantity of straight grains are available in any twelve month period and regrettably we cannot accept orders for specific shapes with Peterson lip or fishtail mouthpiece.
